Research wise, the department's expertise lies quite heavily on optimization algorithms, meanwhile there is a lack of dedicated prof in the AI area. Job prospects wise it probably depends a lot on co-op and other activities like the programming contest. I cannot speak too much on this. (I was in the comp sci department until 2020, afterwards I moved to neuroscience for grad school)
However, if you are thinking about getting an undergrad degree and then moving onto IT jobs, there is an alternative route. You can do an IT diploma in colleges like SAIT in Calgary. From my experience, two-year IT diploma generally teaches practical skills much better, while a comp sci degree focuses more on the theories. If after the diploma, you become interested in getting a degree, you can apply for a post-diploma degree at UofL and do an extra two years to get a full degree. (If you are interested in this route, do remember to check which diploma can qualify for post-diploma degree)

I did my comp sci degree at the UofL and was actually hired by a bank during my senior year so I went straight into industry but ended up coming back to work at the University after a while. Loved my time at the U as a student and I recommend the comp sci program. There’s a few really excellent profs in the math/cpsc dept

I’d say one benefit of the U of L is while yes you’re going to have to take courses outside your major, if you’re not totally certain you want to pursue Comp Sci as a career you have the options to explore different areas and switch your major after you’ve tried a few things out.
Personally I started off as a Chemistry major for a year and decided it wasn’t for me, switching into the comp sci program. For me personally almost none of those courses were wasted and just filled out some of my elective and gler requirements.
There is some brilliant profs in the comp sci dept (Howard Cheng, Wendy Osborn, John Zhang to name a few of my favourites) and some not so great at teaching but getting to start out learning C++ from the beginning I feel has really helped me pick up any language or skill set I desire but it really depends on what kind of work you would like to do after you finish.
The college is definitely a wonderful program and gets you a lot of practical skills in IT work and some other areas but if you’re interested in more advanced comp sci areas like machine learning or processor design I’d recommend the U, although the option of 2 years at the college then 2 at the uni has worked well for many of my friends.
